Finding the real you is as easy saying, “Yes. I believe.”
(Picture is owned by Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale)

Today is Sunday, so naturally I went to Church. My pastor is going through the book of Daniel (we are currently in Chapter 11). He made a small detour at this scripture, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well” (Psalm 139:14, NKJV). We all have  God-dar (aka god-radar), something inside that makes us (even those who choose not believe) aware that nothing about our world is an accident. The earth, the universe that we inhabit speaks to the fact that there had to have been a master plan, blueprints followed. There has to be a CREATOR. Therefore, if the world has design, how much more do we? We all have a purpose there is someone inside (the real us if you will), that is waiting to come out. Often times we miss “the real” because we choose not to follow God’s plan, but society’s. The result we gain the whole world, but we lose our soul (the one thing we own, everything else is on loan). We are happy in moments, but empty the entire time. Why? Because we are not living the “who” we are meant to be. My pastor, Bob Coy made the picture clearer today by reminding us of his past (manager of a casino that had an all girl review) and contrasting that with his present (pastor Bob, Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale).  He said, “We have to push away God in order to reject Him. Why? Because He is in us. He has a specific plan for us. Inside casino Bob, there was pastor Bob waiting to come out.” My question, who is inside of you waiting to come out? Who is inside of me? Are the temporary pleasures of life really worth missing the REAL you/me for? I think not.

So what am I thankful for today? That Bob Coy set pastor Bob free, and that I am finding the “me” that God intended.

Matthew 27. “Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,  saying, ‘I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.’ And they said, ‘What is that to us? You see to it!’ Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, ‘It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.’  And they consulted together and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, ‘And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, and gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me'” (Verses 3-10). This is an unpopular submission, but every time I read this portion of scripture I have this belief that Judas envisioned this all going down differently. Maybe in his mind he thought he was forcing Jesus to act, but instead He died. What I find sad about Judas is that he spent all this time with Jesus and yet didn’t understand Him. He didn’t understand that He came to be a sacrifice. Even more disturbing he didn’t understand that if he asked for forgiveness, he probably would have received it. We do the same walk with God, profess to be Christians yet we don’t understand Him.

A change in perspective, a change of view.

We are house hunting, which is a problem for me because I HATE (<—- NOT an exaggeration) moving. The problem is this move is necessary for many reasons, most importantly cost containment. I am having a little bit of a hard time because I really like where I live. The community is great, waterfront property, nice neighbors, 24-hour security and we have amenities included. So needless to say, when we started our scavenger hunt for homes this morning, my personality was…well, I’ll just say less than stellar.  The first property we went to looked amazing (I thought to myself “Okay it’s not so bad”). However, when we put the key code in the gate to enter the property, we heard it was already taken. Now my less than stellar personality was upset because why make drive all the way out here if…. At this very moment I felt a tug at my heart say, “Stop with the attitude. Just stop. I am not going to give you less.”  Why does God always have to catch my bad attitudes? Why can’t I just trust in His faithfulness? Today, we saw one house and decided against it. However, I have peace because God will not supply us with less than what we need. He is in the business of meeting needs (He occasionally throws a want in there too :)). So I have decided to let go of my fear that we will end up in a ghetto hiding from drug dealers (yes, I always go to the worse case scenario). I have also let go of my attitude. I may not want to move, but that doesn’t make it any less necessary. We don’t always like the changes that come into our lives. But in order for us to grow, we must accept and adapt. Change is always hard, but when it’s God-directed, it is also ALWAYS good.

So what am I thankful for today? That I am learning to accept and adapt (this will make life a whole lot easier).

Matthew 26. I am going to encourage you to read this Chapter on your own. After you do if you are a Christian sit down and reassess your relationship with Christ. Are you a fair weather Christian, or are you committed? Verses 1-23, Jesus predicts His death (which is just two days away) and He is anointed with perfume in preparation for His burial. Verses 14-30, Jesus has Passover with His disciples, and he addresses His betrayer (Verse 25). Here is what I have always wondered, why did no-one react when Jesus told Judas, “Yes it is you”? Was it something that only transpired between the two of them? Did He lean in to answer Him? Because surely the others would have pounded him into the ground had they heard, right? Sorry sidetracked. Verses 31-35, Jesus tells Peter that he will deny Him, not one but three times. Verses 36-46, the garden of Gethsemane. Verses 47-56, the betrayal and the arrest. Why Judas, why? I can’t understand why he did this, especially knowing that Jesus knew it was him. Verses 57-68, Jesus speaks to the Sanhedrin, He doesn’t defined Himself (He has done nothing wrong), instead He simply tells them exactly who He is. I love that I don’t have to defend God. Here is where I want to make my point, in Verses 69-74 Peter denies Christ. But I want to draw your attention to this one fact, I am going to backtrack a bit to make my point, Verse 56,58, “…Then all the disciples deserted Him and fled…But Peter FOLLOWED Him from a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.” Here’s my point, Peter is human he succombed to human fears, BUT he followed all the way to the end. I point this out because we all make mistakes, we all fall short, even as we follow. Peter is an example that we can love God with all our hearts and still miss the mark. We can walk to the end and still not follow through. Yet, God sees our hearts and He will forgive (“He will not crush the weakest reed…” Matthew 12:20, NLT).

Matthew 25. This Chapter is a practical guide for not just Christianity, but for life.  My breakdown:

Verses 1-13 – Be prepared while you wait, The Parable of the Ten Virgins

Verses 14-30 – Work while you wait, The Parable of the Ten Talents

Verses 31-46 – Judgement, The Sheep and the Goat

“At this time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise, however, took oil in a jar along with their lamps. The bridegroom was long in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet Him!’ Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, our lamps are going out.’ ‘No,’ they replied, ‘There may not be enough for both of us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins that were ready went in with Him to the wedding banquet. And the door was SHUT. Later the others also came, ‘Sir, Sir!’ they said, ‘Open the door for us!’ But He replied, “I tell you the truth, I do not know you.’ Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour” (Verses 1-13). In the first parable Jesus reminds us all that we need to be prepared. Sometimes we take this life we live for granted, we make plans have expectations (which is not a bad thing), but we conveniently forget that God has said that life will not always be like this. We must be diligent to keep watch…we must be prepared. Once the door shuts the opportunity is gone. In the parable of the talents He reminds us that waiting does not mean sitting on our hands and swinging our legs. Our faith must be active, as we wait for what God has planned we must actively work, or we may hear this: “You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew I harvested where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest” (Verses 26-27). The last portion of this Chapter is not a parable at all, it is more like a preview of what is to come it is judgement time and we will be judged by what we did with what we had, and on whether or not we were prepared. Life is much like a pass/fail class. Our success depends on two things, 1. How prepared we are. 2. What we do with what we are given.

This journey will be riddled with mistakes we make along the way…take the time to learn from them.

I learned an important lesson from today. I have worked in my current facility for five years. During that time many things have changed: policies, procedures, management, etc. The one thing that has never changed, our relationship with our patients. We strive earnestly to make the atmosphere as close to family as we can. I have had patients tell me they’d rather be at our center than at home. That’s saying a lot…because we’re giving them chemotherapy. I have felt many emotions in my five years: anger, irritation, happiness, and sadness. The one emotion I have never felt…fear. Well, it turns out there really is a first time for everything.  Today we all sat on pins and needles waiting for one particular patient to come in. Why? The cancer had been resolved. The patient is now cancer free. For most people this would have been AMAZING news! For this particular patient, not so much. Why? Well, because now we can’t supply pain medication. Here’s the problem the medication has gone from something used to control pain; to I can’t function without it…addiction.  A mind altered by addiction is unstable. It doesn’t think logically. All an addicted mind knows is that it wants, and anything that stands in the way of that want is BAD. Add to that an already explosive personality and you have a ticking time-bomb waiting to explode. Today did not end up bad , although there were some tense moments (we prepared ourselves for all possible scenarios). After the patient left I realized this truth: just because something is good, that doesn’t make it right. We gave the patient pain killer because we wanted to do something good, we wanted to stop the pain. However, it ended badly because it wasn’t what was needed. Sometimes the best medicine is NO medicine at all. This lesson is true in life as well, we all at some point cover up pain. But in place of medication we use money, power…stuff.  Let’s stop covering pain, let’s instead “heal” the need. Today would have been a much different day had this been the prevailing perspective.

So what am I thankful for today? Hard life lessons (not every lesson is easy and some come with casualties).

Don’t be so quick to escape traffic. Waiting it out can bring unexpected blessings.

This morning as I was driving to work I remembered my Day 114 post (it was about staying in your lane and waiting for traffic to clear). Why the reminder? Yet again I was stuck behind a slow moving vehicle (I think they may have been driving the Flintstones’ car). I quickly moved from behind the car into the lane left of me. As soon (and I mean IMMEDIATELY) after I moved to the left lane, a voice in my head said, “Didn’t you learn the lesson?” So, I immediately moved back to my previous lane. The result? The Flintstones turn left (YES!) and as though God was trying to hit the point home the car that was in front of the Flintstones also turned left. I am in the lane all by myself! After I got to work, it hit me how important this lesson really was. We treat life like a highway we are always rushing through traffic and changing lanes, we want everything done fast. We need to get where we are going NOW! We oftentimes forget that there are lessons to be learned from going slow. Ever heard the saying, “Slow and steady wins the race”? It’s TRUE…it is in the slow moving lane that the lessons are learned. Today I learned, don’t be in such a rush to move. Wait out the traffic, at some point the way will become clear.

So what am I thankful for today? That I actually got a lesson the FIRST time (yup, surprised me too)!

Matthew 24. The disciples ask Jesus for a sign of His second coming. “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation’, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the Holy Place (whoever, reads let them understand)” (Verse 15). In this Chapter Jesus answers the question that we still ask today, “How long?” “When Lord, when?” The day or time is know only to God (even Jesus said He didn’t know Vs. 36). But He gives us signs to look for and if we are diligent we will not be surprised when the time arrives. My suggestion? Read this Chapter for yourself, God’s not hiding the answers are in the book.

Who we travel with, is as important as where we are going.

Who we travel with, is as important as where we are going.

Today my laptop prompted me to update my Java, since it’s a program that allows my internet to run smoothly I chose to update. The security system on my computer asked if I wanted to allow this program to make changes to my system. Again I chose yes. The program starts to upload. Then out of nowhere a program tried to piggyback off the uploading program wanting to plant itself on my computer. My computer security did not pick up the interloper. Why? I have already let down my guard. Had I not been paying attention, I would have inadvertently allowed a program on my computer that would have taken up space and caused my computer to not run as efficiently. As I sat thinking about what almost happened, it dawned on me how important it is to be on guard in life. On this journey we can be thrown off course if we are not alert. There will always be something or someone vying for our attention. If I had not been observant, the configuration of my hard drive would have been completely different. If we are not careful about who we travel with and where we are traveling on our journey, our destination will be drastically altered. We only get one life…be vigilant. Don’t allow intrusion.

So what am I thankful for today? That I am learning to pay attention to the subtleties that can affect the direction of my journey.

Matthew 23. “Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, ‘The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do NOT do what they do, for they do NOT practice what they preach. They tie heavy loads and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to remove them” (Verses 1-4). The burden of religiosity. Jesus said do what they say. Why? Because they only read from the word of God. God’s word will ALWAYS accomplish its purpose (Isaiah 55:11). But don’t follow their example. Ever heard the phrase, “Do as I say, but not as I do”? That’s what Jesus was saying to the crowd and His disciples. We tend to believe that Pastors and religious teachers are infallible, but they are human and prone to sin, just like you and I. So let God’s word be your guide. If it doesn’t line up with what the scriptures say to be true: don’t touch, don’t taste, don’t handle…walk away.
