2 Kings 21. “And the Lord spoke by His servants the prophets, saying, ‘Because Manasseh king of Judah has done these abominations (he has acted more wickedly than all the Amorites who were before him, and has also made Judah sin with his idols), therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing such calamity upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whoever hears of it, both his ears will tingle. And I will stretch over Jerusalem the measuring line of Samaria and the plummet of the house of Ahab; I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down. So I will forsake the remnant of My inheritance and deliver them into the hand of their enemies; and they shall become victims of plunder to all their enemies'” (Verses 10-14). God punishes sin always, what we don’t release is that punishment can come in the most natural of ways. Boss tightens the reigns, financial situations come about. The goal of the trials is not for us to whine, but for us to cry out for forgiveness, and seek the Lord. Don’t run from the trial accept that they are there to bring change, and to draw us to God.

2 Kings 20. “And it happened, before Isaiah had gone out into the middle court, that the word of the Lord came to him, saying, Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the Lord. And I will add to your days fifteen years. I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for My own sake, and for the sake of My servant David” (Verses 4-6). I use to read these verses and think, “Wow, Hezekiah changed God’s mind. But as I have gotten older and wiser in my faith, I have come to realize this is not the case. I realized that God answered Hezekiah’s prayers. God wanted the king to ask, wanted him to communicate, the God of heaven wanted relationship with His creation. For me that is way more awesome than being able to change God’s mind. Why? Because I can have a real relationship with Him, where I can talk to Him, and learn from Him. It doesn’t mean that when I pray the answer will always be yes, but it does mean that whenever I pray… He will ALWAYS hear. Yeah, I kinda love that.

2 Kings 19. “Thus you shall say to your master, Thus says the Lord: Do not be afraid of the words which you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me. Surely I will send a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land” (Verses 5-7). God will always take care of His name, and take care of His people. The king of Assyria was threatening the people of God, telling them that God was not on their side, that God was not strong enough to save them. But God proved the man wrong, when He defended His people, and won. It is easy to feel like we are somehow greater than God, but everyday He proves us wrong, in the most simple of ways.

2 Kings 18. “He removed the high places and broke the sacred pillars, cut down the wooden image and broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and called it Nehushtan. He trusted in the Lord God of Israel, so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor who were before him. For he held fast to the Lord; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments, which the Lord had commanded Moses. The Lord was with him; he prospered wherever he went. And he rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. He subdued the Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory, from watchtower to fortified city” (Verses 4-8). This Chapter sees the return of a king that not only does right in the eyes of the Lord, but obeys Him completely. It is a reminder that we are not to just to good, but we are to obey. God blesses obedience everyday and all the time.

2 Kings 17. “So they feared the Lord, and from every class they appointed for themselves priests of the high places, who sacrificed for them in the shrines of the high places. They feared the Lord, yet served their own gods—according to the rituals of the nations from among whom they were carried away” (Verses 32-33). If I could name these verses something, I would call them the ‘human condition’. Why? Because it is a picture of us, we love God and believe in Him, but give our service and devotion to others. Read the verse, “they feared the LORD, yet served other gods.” We do that everyday, and all the time. We love God, but can’t let go of a boyfriend, a job, or the money. It’s hard sometimes to let go of the tangible for the truth of a God that dwells inside our hearts. But every time we let go of Him for something else, we fall and falter and realize our choice was wrong. It’s a horrible cycle, but it has a solution: Serve God and Him only. Yup, it really is that simple.

2 Kings 16. “ In the seventeenth year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, Ahaz the son of Jotham, king of Judah, began to reign. Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem; and he did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord his God, as his father David had done. But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel; indeed he made his son pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord had cast out from before the children of Israel. And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree” (Verses 1-4). Just a reminder today to serve God in true obedience walk in His way and listen to his voice. Note that God did not say Ahaz did evil, here the scripture said, “he did not do what was right”. Ahaz was nice, probably a great and loved king, but he didn’t lead the people to God. We are not only meant to be nice, we are meant to do good. We are called to be ambassadors of Christ.

2 Kings 15. “In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Azariah the son of Amaziah, king of Judah, became king. He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem. And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father Amaziah had done, except that the high places were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. Then the Lord struck the king, so that he was a leper until the day of his death; so he dwelt in an isolated house. And Jotham the king’s son was over the royal house, judging the people of the land” (Verses 1-5). You can’t serve God half way. Jeroboam becomes king, he does what is right in the sight of God, except… There can be no exceptions. God is not asking for perfection, He understands our human condition, but as much as depends on us we must choose right. Jeroboam served God, but he didn’t lead his people to do the same. The goal of the king is to lead. The goal of the Christian is to draw others to Christ. We can’t do it halfway. Today let’s serve God with our WHOLE heart.

2 Kings 14. “For the Lord saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter; and whether bond or free, there was no helper for Israel. And the Lord did not say that He would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven; but He saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash” (Verses 26-27). I don’t know if you all see the subtlety of these verses. But if you read the entire chapter you will. God never said He would wipe Israel out, in fact His promises to them have always been the opposite. Although their actions and love of sin and disobedience would have given God the right to change His mind, He chose instead to keep His promise. This is comforting to me, I am not always obedient. I fail, I fall, and I make more mistakes than I care to admit, but despite all that God is ALWAYS faithful to do what He promises. Rest in the knowledge that our God is an immovable, unchanging ROCK.

2 Kings 13. “Then Elisha died, and they buried him. And the raiding bands from Moab invaded the land in the spring of the year. So it was, as they were burying a man, that suddenly they spied a band of raiders; and they put the man in the tomb of Elisha; and when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet” (Verses 20-21). The power of God. Ever felt dead, lifeless? Like nothing you do means anything? Rub up against God, yeah it sounds odd, but that is the kind of power that emanates from Him. He can bring life to our dried bones, He can revive our lifeless state. The man in this chapter was dead, but his dead body touched the bones of the “man of God” and death left him, and he regained new life. So the statement stands, want to feel alive? Touch God.

2 Kings 12. “In the seventh year of Jehu, Jehoash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba. Jehoash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him. But the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places” (Verses 1-3). Just a reminder, we can’t do it half way. Jehoash did right in the eyes, of the Lord, but the people did not follow. Doing right and obedience is not just for us to hoard. It is for us to share, it is to bring others to the truth, to the unending peace that comes from knowing and loving God. Don’t just do right by yourself, live in such a way that others want to follow in your footsteps.
