Deuteronomy 14. “You are  the children of the Lord your God; you shall not cut yourselves nor shave the front of your head for the dead. For you are a holy people to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth” (Verses 1-4). Today just in case you don’t feel special. Don’t feel like you have a purpose or a meaning. Remember you are treasured by God. He loves you and has  plans and purpose for you that are beyond your wildest dreams.

Deuteronomy 13. “If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, ‘Let us go after other gods’—which you have not known—‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the Lord your God is testing you to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him” (Verses 1-4). Ever got just what you wanted? Lived just as you pleased? Only to realize that you have forgotten who you really are? Sometimes God leads us where WE want, to show us what’s really in our hearts. Don’t be fooled. Don’t be led astray. Seek Him. Desire Him. He will lead you to your REAL destination.

Deuteronomy 11. “For if you carefully keep all these commandments which I command you to do—to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, and to hold fast to Him— then the Lord will drive out all these nations from before you, and you will dispossess greater and mightier nations than yourselves. Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the River Euphrates, even to the Western Sea, shall be your territory. No man shall be able to stand against you; the Lord your God will put the dread of you and the fear of you upon all the land where you tread, just as He has said to you” (Verses 22-25). This morning I woke up feeling a little fearful about my new journey. Okay maybe not fear as much as anxious. On my way to work I saw the most beautiful rainbow I had ever seen, ever. It spanned the entire see-able sky. Then I read this. God keeps His promises. If I go, do, and listen to the beat of His drum I will have security and peace. Every place where the sole of my feet tread will be mine (this is true for us ALL). Trust. Follow. Obey.

Deuteronomy 10. “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good?” (Verses 10-12). Ever asked this question: “God, what do you want from me?” Well here’s the answer, “Fear Him, walk in all His ways, love Him and serve Him with ALL your heart and soul. OBEY.” There now you have your answer. Go and do what He asked.

Deuteronomy 9. “Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, a people great and tall, the descendants of the Anakim, whom you know, and of  whom you heard it  said, ‘Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?’ Therefore understand today that the Lord your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the Lord has said to you. ‘Do not think in your heart, after the Lord your God has cast them out before you, saying, Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land’; but it  is  because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out from before you” (Verses 1-4). I encourage everyone to read this Chapter in its entirety. Why? It is a reminder to us of the grace that Christ’s death has extended to us. Israel sinned,  a lot and God’s first plan of action (everytime) was totally destruction. But Moses would pray, fast, and intercede on behalf of God’s people. Moses, then, is a picture of what Jesus does for us today. We sin, but Christ makes intercession between us and God plest He consumes us. We must be mindful of our sin and how it affects our relationship with God. Then we praise Jesus when we realize He took our sins away.

Deuteronomy 8. “And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it  is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it  is this day. Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the Lord your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish. As the nations which the Lord destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the Lord your God” ( Verses 18-20). There it is again. Our theme… obedience. In this chapter Moses reminds the children of Israel of why they needed to trust and follow God alone. Of why only He deserved their praise and adoration. Then he let them know the consequences of disobedience. God at no point has hid from us either the consequences or the blessings of obedience Vs disobedience. It’s a choice we get to make. Choose wisely.

Deuteronomy 7. “And the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you little by little; you will be unable to destroy them at once, lest the beasts of the field become too numerous for you. But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, and will inflict defeat upon them until they are destroyed. And He will deliver their kings into your hand, and you will destroy their name from under heaven; no one shall be able to stand against you until you have destroyed them” (Verses 22-24). I (and I am sure you, too) want everything, NOW. What I like about these verses is that  they display the infinite wisdom of God. He didn’t give the promise land to Israel all at once, but they gained it little by little. Each victory solidifying the strength and power of the God they serve and follow. The same holds true for us. God gifts us with one small victory at a time growing our faith and trust in Him.

Deuteronomy 6. “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates” (Verses 6-9). God wants us to remember and keep His commandments. So much that they should at all times be on the forefront of our minds and hearts. He wants us to talk about His laws, think about His words. He wants us to write it on our eye lids? Mmmm… 🙂 . The point: His words should be our guiding light, our light house, our first and only line of defense. He wants to be first. He’s God.

Numbers 5. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain” (Verse 11). Mmmm. God will not hold them guiltless who take HIS name for granted. We forget that God is holy. His character is holy, His statues are holy. His existence is holy. Yet we use His name as a curse word. Listen to what He says. We. Will. Not. Be. Blameless. He will judge those who forget that His name is meant to be praised.
