Ever read the story ‘Horton Hears A Who’, by Dr. Seuss? Here the gist, the Whos in Whoville are being threatened, their world is about to collapse. They need help. The problem, their world is unseen and unnoticed. Why? Because they are very, very small. One day Horton, the elephant hears a cry for help and meets the Mayor of Whoville, who enlists Horton’s help to save their world. Horton is ridiculed and made fun of by those around him, because they could not see or hear the need. So the Whos and Horton device a plan. The plan to make a noise so loud the world at large could not ignore their existence. On our journey we will encounter needs that have to be met homelessness, poverty…the list could go on for miles. In a perfect world the job of every human being would be to first see the need then meet it (not true in a perfect world there would be NO need). We do not live in a perfect world. Often times needs go unmet. Why? Because people who see the need, stay quiet. Horton heard a cry for help, he answered the call and this gave the Whos the courage to be heard. The goal of the journey is not just the destination, it is also the lives you affect on the way. If you see a need, pray and ask God to show you how to meet it. And like Horton remember, “a [need’s] a [need], no matter how small.” In life a small need unmet, will become a large problem hard to solve. See. Pray. Meet.
So what am I thankful for today? Life lessons from ‘Horton Hears A Who’.
