Genesis 35. “And Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, ‘Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments. Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me in the way which I have gone.’ So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree which was by Shechem. And they journeyed, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob” (Verses 2-5). Why did Jacob have to tell them to put away foreign gods? Hadn’t they been with him all this time? Weren’t they witnesses to all the things that God had done? I want to judge, but I am the same. I am a witness to all the things God has done in my life, in the lives of those around me. Yet I still don’t trust, and put my faith in other things. But just like He did for Jacob and his household, God does the same for me: He keeps my enemy from overtaking me and He gives me peace during the storm.
