2 Kings 2. “And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?’ Elisha said, ‘Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.’ So he said, ‘You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.’ Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven” (Verses 9-11). Elijah is about to be taken and Elisha knows it, but he won’t allow them to be separated, my guess Elisha wanted to see, wanted to experience God’s power first hand. Elijah keeps trying to separate himself from the other prophet, but Elisha stuck like glue.. till the question was asked, “What may I do for you?” Elisha’s request, a double dose of Elijah’s spirit. Some may think the answer is lack luster, but when you realize that the spirit that empowered Elijah was God’s, then Elisha’s request becomes one we should all hope for. Elisha didn’t want more of the other man’s power, he wanted a double dose of God’s power. He wanted to serve and represent God, and he knew he’d need an extra measure of God’s strength to do so. God has promised that we have all we need to function in this world (for life and godliness), so today let’s do what Elisha did, let’s tap into God.
