2 Kings 23. “Then the king stood by a pillar and made a covenant before the Lord, to follow the Lord and to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people took a stand for the covenant” (Verse 3). Finally a king that does everything right. A king who not only loves and serves God, but leads his people to follow God as well. Josiah did not just get of some of the idols, he literally rid Israel of all of it. He lead the people back to real worship. This chapter is a reminder to us who call ourselves Christians of what the “call” is. We are not meant to just be nice, just be good, we are meant to lead people to God. We are meant to tear down idols and show people the truth of Christ. Today I am convicted by this king’s action… I pray you are as well.

2 Kings 21. “And the Lord spoke by His servants the prophets, saying, ‘Because Manasseh king of Judah has done these abominations (he has acted more wickedly than all the Amorites who were before him, and has also made Judah sin with his idols), therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing such calamity upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whoever hears of it, both his ears will tingle. And I will stretch over Jerusalem the measuring line of Samaria and the plummet of the house of Ahab; I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down. So I will forsake the remnant of My inheritance and deliver them into the hand of their enemies; and they shall become victims of plunder to all their enemies'” (Verses 10-14). God punishes sin always, what we don’t release is that punishment can come in the most natural of ways. Boss tightens the reigns, financial situations come about. The goal of the trials is not for us to whine, but for us to cry out for forgiveness, and seek the Lord. Don’t run from the trial accept that they are there to bring change, and to draw us to God.

2 Kings 17. “So they feared the Lord, and from every class they appointed for themselves priests of the high places, who sacrificed for them in the shrines of the high places. They feared the Lord, yet served their own gods—according to the rituals of the nations from among whom they were carried away” (Verses 32-33). If I could name these verses something, I would call them the ‘human condition’. Why? Because it is a picture of us, we love God and believe in Him, but give our service and devotion to others. Read the verse, “they feared the LORD, yet served other gods.” We do that everyday, and all the time. We love God, but can’t let go of a boyfriend, a job, or the money. It’s hard sometimes to let go of the tangible for the truth of a God that dwells inside our hearts. But every time we let go of Him for something else, we fall and falter and realize our choice was wrong. It’s a horrible cycle, but it has a solution: Serve God and Him only. Yup, it really is that simple.

2 Kings 16. “ In the seventeenth year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, Ahaz the son of Jotham, king of Judah, began to reign. Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem; and he did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord his God, as his father David had done. But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel; indeed he made his son pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord had cast out from before the children of Israel. And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree” (Verses 1-4). Just a reminder today to serve God in true obedience walk in His way and listen to his voice. Note that God did not say Ahaz did evil, here the scripture said, “he did not do what was right”. Ahaz was nice, probably a great and loved king, but he didn’t lead the people to God. We are not only meant to be nice, we are meant to do good. We are called to be ambassadors of Christ.

2 Kings 12. “In the seventh year of Jehu, Jehoash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba. Jehoash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him. But the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places” (Verses 1-3). Just a reminder, we can’t do it half way. Jehoash did right in the eyes, of the Lord, but the people did not follow. Doing right and obedience is not just for us to hoard. It is for us to share, it is to bring others to the truth, to the unending peace that comes from knowing and loving God. Don’t just do right by yourself, live in such a way that others want to follow in your footsteps.

2 Kings 10. “However Jehu did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin, that is, from the golden calves that were at Bethel and Dan. And the Lord said to Jehu, ‘because you have done well in doing what is right in My sight, and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in My heart, your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.’ But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart; for he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam, who had made Israel sin” (Verses 29-31). There are days that I want to apologize to God that we are the instruments He has to use. This scripture is a great minder why. It is so easy for us to turn away, so easy for us to forget what God said, what God did. Jehu obeyed and followed God’s plan until he felt like doing his own thing. We do the same in a bind, when we are scared, when God is showing Himself powerful on our behalf, we listen we obey. But the moment He tells us to do something outside of our plans, we act as though we don’t understand. The beauty and awesomeness of God is that He, “remembers our frame, He knows we are but dust”, this is why we are not consumed. Today let’s not use God for our own gain, instead let’s obey His word and spread His love to a world in need of Him.

2 Kings 8. “And Elisha said to him, ‘Go, say to him, You shall certainly recover. However the Lord has shown me that he will really die.’ Then he set his countenance in a stare until he was ashamed; and the man of God wept. And Hazael said, ‘Why is my lord weeping?’ He answered, ‘Because I know the evil that you will do to the children of Israel: Their strongholds you will set on fire, and their young men you will kill with the sword; and you will dash their children, and rip open their women with child.’ So Hazael said, ‘But what is your servant—a dog, that he should do this gross thing?’ And Elisha answered, ‘The Lord has shown me that you will become king over Syria'” (Verses 10-13). Have you ever found yourself turning into something you never thought you’d become. It feels to me that, that is exactly Hazel’s circumstance, but with one small difference. God showed him before hand, therefore giving him a chance to repent, and giving him and opportunity to make a different choice, which he never took. It is sad how easily we cast of God’s gifts for things that are easier, but eternally less fulfilling. Today’s lesson when God gives you and easy out… TAKE IT. Don’t wallow in sin when He wants to give you real freedom.

2 Kings 5. “Then Naaman went with his horses and chariot, and he stood at the door of Elisha’s house. And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, ‘Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored to you, and you shall be clean.’ But Naaman became furious, and went away and said, ‘Indeed, I said to myself, He will surely come out to me, and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the place, and heal the leprosy. Are not the Abanah and the Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?’ So he turned and went away in a rage. And his servants came near and spoke to him, and said, ‘My father, if the prophet had told you to do something great, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he says to you, ‘Wash, and be clean? So he went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean” (Verses 9-14). Aren’t we all like Naaman wanting God to do an amazing thing? But when what God wants is simply and easy, we think it can’t be Him. Naaman was actually offended. It’s almost funny to me that we expect we are more important than God. Naaman was almost so stubborn he would have stayed with his disease rather than do what God said and be healed. Let’s not hold to that stubbornness. If God says do it, do and be healed.

1 Kings 10. “Then she said to the king: “It was a true report which I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom. However I did not believe the words until I came and saw with my own eyes; and indeed the half was not told me. Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame of which I heard. Happy are your men and happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom! Blessed be the Lord your God, who delighted in you, setting you on the throne of Israel! Because the Lord has loved Israel forever, therefore He made you king, to do justice and righteousness'” (Verses 6-9). The Queen of Sheba traveled a great distance to come to king Solomon, she had heard the reports and wanted to find out for herself if what she heard was true. What I find awesome is that she didn’t walk away telling Solomon how awesome he was, she walked away telling Solomon how awesome God was. That’s the goal, that’s what we are called to do: Point people to God. Solomon’s love for God brought a queen to the Lord, and if we think about that from the perspective of paying it forward, God’s wisdom not only affected the queen, but the people she ruled. Today let us like Solomon draw people by what they see and hear in us.

I Kings 7. “Thus Solomon had all the furnishings made for the house of the Lord: the altar of gold, and the table of gold on which was the show bread; the lamp stands of pure gold, five on the right side and five on the left in front of the inner sanctuary, with the flowers and the lamps and the wick-trimmers of gold; the basins, the trimmers, the bowls, the ladles, and the censers of pure gold; and the hinges of gold, both for the doors of the inner room (the Most Holy Place) and for the doors of the main hall of the temple” (Verses 48-50). Solomon gave God the best of all he had. This chapter talks about Solomon furnishing the house he built for God. Everything was the finest of the finest. It reminded me that we are to give God our best. The best parts of ourselves, and we are to give it willingly. Serving God should not be a chore that we feel forced to do, it should be an act of worship that stems from a desire to want to serve the one who gave His only Son, so we could have life. Today serve willingly and give God your best. He deserves it.
