Joshua 5. “Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, ‘Are you for us or for our enemies?’ ‘Neither,’ he replied, ‘but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.’ Then Joshua fell face down to the ground in reverence, and asked him, ‘What message does my Lord have for his servant?’ The commander of the Lord’s army replied, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.’ And Joshua did so” (Verses 13-15). This chapter is awesome and sad to me all at the same time. Why sad? Note it was not God who spoke to Joshua (as He did with Moses), but He sent the commander of His army, still awesome, yes, but just not the same. We have the opportunity to have a Moses relationship with God. How? Christ has given us access to stand before God’s throne without fear. We are clean in Him, we are the spotless bride.  I love the response of God’s general when asked if he was for Israel or against her. His answer, “Neither”. He is for God, his will and desire was to do what God commanded. PERIOD. Here is something even cooler, Joshua’s response. Face down in reverence not to the general, but to God he asks, “What message does MY Lord have for HIS servant?” I struggle with, “Dear Lord help me be a light.” Joshua is leading literally millions of people into what seems like certain death (from the perspective of the world). My question would have been, “Lord are you sure?” His question, “Lord what do you want me to do?” This is the goal of the Christian walk, to say like Joshua, “Lord what message do YOU have for YOUR servant today?” Then when He answers, DO IT.

Joshua 4. “Then you shall let your children know, saying, ‘Israel crossed over this Jordan on dry land’; for the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed over, that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of the Lord , that it is  mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever” (Verses 22-24). Remember.  Remember what God has done. Teach the next generation so that they may fear and love Him too. Many times we forget how we achieved our goals. We forget that it was God who brought us out of darkness and placed us in the light. We begin to believe the praise and pretty words of others. We begin to believe that we did it on our own. Joshua wanted the people to remember ALL the blessings came from God. It is the same for us… ALL the things we have been blessed with came from God. There is no such thing as a self-made person everyone has had help and that help was God’s hand reaching out to us. So today remember what God has done. Then thank Him.

Deuteronomy 31. “And the Lord said to Moses: ‘Behold, you will rest with your fathers; and this people will rise and play the harlot with the gods of the foreigners of the land, where they go to  be among them, and they will forsake Me and break My covenant which I have made with them. Then My anger shall be aroused against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide My face from them, and they shall be devoured. And many evils and troubles shall befall them, so that they will say in that day, Have not these evils come upon us because our God is  not among us? And I will surely hide My face in that day because of all the evil which they have done, in that they have turned to other gods'” (Verses 16-18). These verses stood out. Why? God knew Israel was going to be disobedient, He knew they were going to serve other gods and break His heart. But despite knowing all this He still called them His chosen people. He still freed them from slavery. And every single time they repented, He forgave. His mercy and grace is as active now as it was then. He gave His only son to prove that point. In return we should do our best to not break His heart.

Deuteronomy 23. “When you make a vow to the Lord your God, you shall not delay to pay it; for the Lord your God will surely require it of you, and it would be sin to you. But if you abstain from vowing, it shall not be sin to you. That which has gone from your lips you shall keep and perform, for you voluntarily vowed to the Lord your God what you have promised with your mouth” (Verses 21-23). Don’t say it if you don’t mean it. If you do say it, own it. We are to be people of our word. We should have integrity. That word is almost extinct in our “sweet talk” culture. We say what people want to hear to get what we want, then find loop holes to renege on promises we have made. That’s not what we are called to do. Our word should be our bond. Live a life that allows another to trust you and take you at your word.

Deuteronomy 18. “But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die. And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?’— when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord , if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him” (Verses 20-22). How can you tell the truth from a lie? If someone says God says this,  or God says that. But it doesn’t happen,  then it wasn’t God. Because if God said He is going to do it,  He DOES… EVERYTIME.
