Had an interesting conversation with my brother tonight regarding technology? The conversation was about the merit (or lack thereof) of technological advancements. It all started when my brother said he couldn’t wait for autonomous cars to become main stream (we were stuck in traffic at the time), his reasoning they eliminate human error (did I mention traffic jam). I am by no means a hater of technology. I love gadgets and electronics. But I am not blind to all that we have lost, correction given up due to technological advances. The thing that was promoted as a time saver has actually ended up costing us time. Time with family, time with friends, time learning things the right way, and time that teaches how to wait patiently. Technology by no means is inherently bad or evil, but our dependence on it had taken away the human touch that makes the journey worthwhile. We don’t talk in person, we use cell phones. We have virtual this and virtual that and forsake the importance of real live human interaction. I am not saying give up your electronics, or forsake technology. I am just saying old school ain’t so bad: A hand written letter instead of text. A visit instead of a phone call. Family game night instead of each person alone with their favorite electronic device. Family and friends won’t always be around; our time with them should be REAL, not virtual.
“Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another…” (Hebrews 10:25).
So what am I thankful for today? A “real” conversation with my brother.
