Genesis 31. “Then Rachel and Leah replied, ‘Do we still have any share in the inheritance of our father’s estate? Does he not regard us as foreigners? Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us. Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children. So do whatever God has told you” (Verses 14-16). After saying this, “Do WHATEVER God has told you.” Why then did Rachel do this, “When Laban had gone to shear his sheep, Rachel stole her father’s household gods” (Verses 19). After witnessing the power of GOD almighty (read the chapter), why did Rachel feel the need to take false gods with her? Did she need a back-up, for just in case? Why trust in something that doesn’t work, when you have access to the thing that DOES. God had protected Jacob despite Laban’s best effort to make the outcome go in his favor. Every time Laban changed the game, God dealt the hand in Jacob’s favor. Rachel was an eyewitness to all of this. Her father’s gods never once protected him from God almighty. Yet, she felt the need to take them on the journey that God was leading her family. We do that all the time, God is moving us forward, but we (like Rachel) cling to the past, holding tight to what we know (even if it has never worked). Let GO. There is no moving forward if we are still chained to the past.
